Pastor's Roundtable for August 2020 - 8-16-20 - 7:00 am (cst)

This is episode is the 8'clock hour of the Pastor's Roundtable for the month of August taken from a live broadcast on WFSK radio at Fisk University in Nashville.  Guest pastors are: Rev. Edward Hill, JR of Holy Ground Missionary Baptist Church and Rev. David G. Lattimore of 15th Avenue Baptist Church.  

Among the topics discussed are: racial and ethnic difference between the two-sides of Nashville these churches are in Rev. Hill's in in South Nashville and Rev. Lattimore is in North Nashville both have African American neighborhoods and businesses.   

This was interesting in the discussion around demographics, historical perspective on the areas as they relate to gentrification, the double crisis we dealt with and are still dealing with i.e. deadly tornado, the pandemic, watching God work through all of that and much we have to be thankful for.

Among the guest were Katina Beard CEO of Matthew Walker Health Center with a on COVID-19 testing resource then ehar from Donnell Williams.  He serves as the President of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (N.A.R.E.B.).  He's a long-time member of the trade organization where he's been actively involved in the trade association’s efforts to promote the meaningful exchange of ideas about the real estate business and how to best serve its clientele.  He gave information on financial constants in the growth of Black home ownership.  

Lastly, Loren Appin, he's COO and Co-Founder of Fishbowl will share some workplace trends and survey data amongst Fishbowl professionals working from home.

Hands Up Don't Shoot - Dr. Jennifer Cobbina - 8-12-20

The episode is from a live broadcast of my show on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 5:00 pm.  I talked with the guest right after the first break headlines came before that.  The guest was Jennifer Cobbina, Ph.D., she's an Associate Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University.

n Hands Up, Don’t Shoot, Jennifer Cobbina draws on in-depth interviews with nearly two hundred residents of Ferguson and Baltimore, conducted within two months of the deaths of Brown and Gray. She examines how protestors in both cities understood their experiences with the police, how those experiences influenced their perceptions of policing, what galvanized Black Lives Matter as a social movement, and how policing tactics during demonstrations influenced subsequent mobilization decisions among protesters. 

Artist of the Week Interviews - Patti Austin & Greg Field - 8-13-20

This episode is from a WFSK weekly feature called "Artist of the Week.  It aired live on WFSK JAZZY 88 Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 12:30 pm (cst) 

Patti Austin, Ledisi and David Alan Grier are among artist featured on the project, Ella 100: Live at the Apollo! program.  This interview was total joy and so interesting with Patti Austin and Greg Field.  

Coinciding with Ella Fitzgerald’s birthday on Saturday (April 25), Concord Jazz is releasing Ella 100: Live at the Apollo! on Friday (April 24). The tribute was recorded at the iconic Harlem, New York venue where the premier jazz vocalist got her start competing in its equally legendary Amateur Night talent show.

Three-time Grammy Award winner and 2010 Latin Grammy producer of the year Gregg Field produced the 2016 Apollo Theater birthday celebration from which the album stems, casting a lineup of contemporary vocalists that included Patti Austin, Andra Day, Ledisi, Lizz Wright, Cassandra Wilson and Monica Mancini, along with special guests. Ella 100: Live at the Apollo! also finds Field revisiting his musical roots: he formerly toured as Fitzgerald's drummer.

 

The 411 Show's Wednesday Afternoon Drive Edition - 8-5 -20 Hr. 2 - Howard J. Ross was the Guest

This show was recorded from a live broadcast our my show on WFSK radio Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 5:00 pm  (cdt)  Thank you to our Nashville-based noon-profit advocacy group Equity Alliance for giving the News From the Community segment.  They proactively advocates for African Americans and other communities of color to have a fair and just opportunity at realizing the American dream.  Equity Alliance was recently asked by the Mayors Office to coordinate a survey to re-distribute Cares Act funds to those who need it at the grassroots level.

Long-time diversity and inclusion trainer and author Howard J. Ross was back to discuss his updated book Everyday Bias.  As always he was excellent and understood the topic very, very well.

411 Show's Wednesday Afternoon Drive Edition - 8-5-20

This show was recorded from a live broadcast our my show on WFSK radio Wednesday, August 5,  2020 at 4:00 pm  (cdt).  News from the Community segment was on pre-election questions leading up to the Primary Election on 8-6-20.  Details on voting by mail and absentee ballots came from on came from Jeff Roberts  of the Davidson County Election Commission where he serves as the Administrator.  

Guest for the hour was Dr. Adrienne Battle, Director of Metro Schools to talk about the recent re-opening of school this semester remotely during the pandemic, safety, technology concerns, etc.   

Thank you for your time Dr. Battle.  She has only been in her capacity as Director less that a year.   

Artist of the Week Interviews - Quinton Gerard W. 8-5-20

This episode is from a WFSK weekly feature called "Artist of the Week.  It aired on WFSK JAZZY 88 Thursday, August 5, 2020 at 12:30 pm (cst)  His new release is entitled "Cleared For Takeoff".  He's Louisiana's own funky sax man and a true talent.  Known in the smooth & contemporary jazz realm as The Fnky Sax player Quinton, says of his style "the method of playing saxophone characterized by incorporating elements of Funk, R & B, Gospel, Blues and Jazz supported by the underlying foundation of the urban culture and experience.”

His latest release takes the listener on a real musical take-off into his gifting to lay it down with that sax where you cruise without having to where your seat belts.     

Book Discussion for the Community of Faith with Jason Gaboury Wait With Author - 8-9-20 -20

Jason Gaboury is a regional ministry director with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He's also an Anglican friar (Anglican Order of Preachers). He has contributed to a number of books, including Drama Team Handbook.

His new book Wait For Me: Meeting God in Loneliness.  He takes one of a journey from Genesis to the Gospels, and describes loneliness as a human condition God uses for our transformation and his transcendent purposes in us.  This was especially interesting as our we are experiencing a global pandemic.  

I really did enjoy his conversation.

Is Christianity the White Man's Religion? (book & topic) Dr. Antipas Harris. - 8-2-20

This episode was recorded from a live broadcast of my show from the studios of WFSK-FM radio in Nashville, on Sunday, 8-2-20 at 08:00am (cdt).  Is Christianity the White Man's Religion?: How the Bible Is Good News for People of Color.  This was an excellent conversation with the author Dr. Antipas L. Harris.    

 

I enjoyed this conversation and his approach to the subject.  Among many young people of color, there is a growing wariness about organized religion and Christianity in particular. If Christianity is for everyone, why does the Bible seem to endorse slavery? Why do most popular images of Jesus feature a man with white skin and blue eyes? Is evangelical Christianity “good news” or a tool of white supremacy?

 

Harris holds a dual appointment as president-dean of Jakes Divinity School (JDS) and associate pastor at The Potter’s House (TPH), both located in Dallas, Texas.
