Black History Month Book - Anxious to Talk About It with Carolyn Helsel 2-2-20

This episode is from a live show broadcast on Sunday, February 02, 2020 at 8:00 am (cst).  My first Black History Boob fir the month was directed at dismantling racism within the community of faith.  Anxious to Talk About It: Helping White Christians Talk Faithfully about Racism by Carolyn B. Helsel, PhD, a professor of preaching at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, where she has taught since 2015. 

She draws on her successful experiences with white congregations to offer us tools to embrace and explore these anxious feelings.  This was an interesting conversation.

He has been an English teacher, school administrator, central office administrator, and superintendent in Maryland, Delaware, and Tennessee. Joseph says God's promises can be achieved in your life if one maintains their faith and develop an ability to persevere.

Artist of the Week Interview - Peter White - 2-20-20

This episode is from a WFSK JAZZy 88 weekly feature called "Artist of the Week.  It aired on WFSK JAZZY 88 Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 12:30 pm (cst) with the spotlight guitarist Peter White.   His latest endeavor titled “Music for STARLUX Airlines” is a collection of songs written for a new luxury airline based in Taiwan called STARLUX Airlines. Peter was commissioned by the airline  to record music for their onboard entertainment system.

It was so good to catch up with Peter again.  This is his 4th time in the Spotlight over the last 14-years.  

 

Black History Month Book Color N' America by Roy S. Wyatt - 2-5-20

 This episode aired live on WFSK radio on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 from :00 pm to :00 pm (cst) This hour started with my News from the Community Segment on job skills and recruiting for veterans. Chris Stephens RecruitMilitary’s Event Director, who is also a US Air Force Veteran.  He gave details on a Nashville Veterans Job Fair helping Nashville veterans, transitioning military and military spouses find meaningful career opportunities.

Guest for the show is Roy S. Wyatt author of 8 books, we discussed his latest Color N' America: An Illustrated Guide to African-Americans Pursuit of Freedom and History in the United States of America. 

He says "as African-Americans, it is imperative to understand our heritage and history. While America traditionally revels in either Civil War battles or founding fathers, many great contributions of African-Americans have widely gone unrecognized. But we cannot forget. In an effort to honor African-Americans expansive and growing history, we must pay tribute to the struggles and achievements of the people and events that have shaped our nation."

Healing Racial Trauma with Sheila Wise Rowe Feb. 09, 2020

This episode was from a live broadcast on Sunday, 2-9-20 at 8:00 am (cst)  The guest Sheila Wise Rowe discussed her new book Healing Racial Trauma: The Road to Resilience.  She says we experience ongoing racial trauma as this lie is perpetuated by the action or inaction of the government, media, viral videos, churches, and within families of origin. In contrast, Scripture declares that we are all fearfully and wonderfully made. 

For over twenty-five years she has counseled abuse and trauma survivors in the United States. Sheila ministered to homeless and abused women and children in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she also taught counseling and trauma-related courses for a decade.

This episode is a weekly feature on Bob Baldwin, he's an award winning Pianist/Arranger and Radio Host of the NewUrbanJazz Lounge.  We discussed his latest release entitled “Henna” among other things.  WFSK carry's Bob Show on Friday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. This is Bob's 31st release.

This episode is from a WFSK weekly feature called "Artist of the Week.  It aired on WFSK JAZZY 88 Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 12:30 pm (cst) with the spotlight on Grammy-winning composer and bassists Christian McBride.  He discussed among many things his new release "The Movement Revisited: A Musical Portrait of Four Icons".  It's a culminating documentation of a richly inspired piece – lauding four key figures of the Civil Rights Movement: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Muhammad Ali.

Revolution in Black & White; Photos of Ernest Withers - Feb. 12, 2020

This episode is from a live show broadcast on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 5:00 pm (cst).  The 411 Show's Community News segment is first followed by book discussion with photo historian Richard Cahan. Revolution in Black and White: Photographs of the Civil Rights Era by Ernest Withers is co-authored by Cahan. 

Ernest C. Withers was one of the most prominent African-American photographers of the civil rights era. During the course of his work, he took thousands photographs that document the civil rights movement―from the Emmett Till trial in 1955 to the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968.  They are also important examples of photojournalism, documenting decades of struggle in Memphis and the Mid-South. They serve as an important missing link in the civil rights narrative.
