Guest for the rest of the hour was on U.S. Congressman Jim Cooper of Tennessee.  Sharon has the Congressman on her show several times a year to get an overview of what's going on on Capitol Hill.  

Artist of the Week Interviews - Leslie Drayton -6-25-20

WFSK's weekly spotlight on new smooth & contemporary album releases and was started by Ms. Kay in 2006.  Artist of the Week for June 25, 2020 was trumpeter Leslie Drayton, his latest release is Chasing Landscapes.   

 

A founding member of Earth, Wind & Fire, Drayton went on to be involved with a variety of projects during the 1970s. In addition to playing in the orchestra pit of the Hollywood production of the counterculture musical Hair, he arranged and conducted sessions for Nancy Wilson and New Birth and served as music director/conductor for Marvin Gaye and Sylvester. He played big-band jazz with the Cab Calloway, Gerald Wilson, and Louis Bellson orchestras.

Much was discussed with Rev. Dr. Jason Curry Dean of the Fisk Memorial Chapel and Robert Taylor, Church Administrator at Word Of Life Christina Center International. Much of the discussion wrapped around Black life, the pandemic, upheaval, peaceful protests and what kind of change will this global vibration bring?

E. Delores Johnson on Her Family Memoir "Say I'm Dead" - 6-17-20

This episode was recorded from my live show on WFSK Radio in Nashville on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at 4:00 pm (cst) News from the community came from Michael Milliner from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity gave details on a Father's Day Prayer Service. The guest was E. Delores Johnson author of Say I'm Dead: A Family Memoir of Race, Secrets, and Love. 

 

Her book is the true story of family secrets, separation, courage, and trans-formation through five generations of interracial relationships. Fearful of prison time—or lynching—for violating Indiana’s anti miscegenation laws in the 1940s, Ms. Johnson’s black father and white mother fled Indianapolis to secretly marry in Buffalo, New York. 

 

When Johnson was born, social norms and her government-issued birth certificate said she was Negro, nullifying her mother’s white blood in her identity. Later, as a Harvard-educated business executive feeling too far from her black roots, she searched her father’s black genealogy. But in the process, Johnson suddenly realized that her mother’s whole white family was—and always had been—missing. W

 

Black Wall Street Memorial - Dr. Tiffany Crutcher - 5-27-20

This show was recorded from a live broadcast of my show on WFSK radio on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at 4:00 pm (cst)  It was wonderful to talk with Dr. Tiffany Crutcher, founder of the Black Wall Street Memorial and the Tulsa Community Remembrance Coalition are launching the “10,000 Brick Campaign” throughout May to build a memorial to Black Wall Street in honor of those lynched during the 1921 Race Massacre.  

This interview with Dr. Crutcher was prior to the announcement by the president that he was bringing his campaign rally to Tulsa on Juneteenth.  She also lost her twin brother to police violence and shares her story on it.  Dr. Crutcher is also Founder & Executive Director Terence Crutcher Foundation.

 

Transformational Mentoring for the new and the Next Generation - Ebony S. Small - 6-14-20

The episode was recorded from a live broadcast of my show on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at 8:00 am (cst).  It was a pleasure to chat with this guest Associate pastor Ebony S. Small to discuss her new book The Leader in You: Discovering Your Unexpected Path to Influence.

Before we went inot he books contents I felt compelled to get her comments on some of the recent headlines involving issues of race, color, police brutality, etc. She works at the grassroots level encouraging young people in Harlem and around the nation.    

Ebony S. Small is the vice president of multiplication at PULSE. She was formerly director of Movement Day Expressions with movement.org, where she was dedicated to catalyzing leaders to affect cities across the globe. She was selected as a Lausanne Younger Leader in 2016. Ebony also serves as an associate pastor at Bethel Gospel Assembly in New York City

This is hour 2 of a show broadcasts live on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at 5:00 pm Nashville's growing issues of injustice and  the need to reform our cities police dept as the conversation plays out around the world.  The hour was started with the closing comments from the prior hour's guest Councilman Freddie O'Connell. My guest for the full hour was Community Oversight Board Member and Director of Black Votes Matter Timothy Hughes. 

These were great conversations.  

 

Legislative Update with Senator Brenda Gilmore - 6-10-20

This hour was recorded from my live broadcast on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at 4:00pm and covers many of the days top stories involving racial tensions, Confederate statues at the Capital, protests, etc.  Senator Gilmore recently sponsored some legislation to get the bust of Nathan Bedfor Forrest out of the Statehouse.  

It was voted down by the Republican led Legislature. 

Also included in this hour was a conversation with with Metro Councilman Freddie O'Connell.  He is 1 of the 14 Council members who are calling on the Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson to step down amid his lack of confidence from a range of members of the community on the need to stop police brutality and make reforms.

This is WFSK's radio's weekly feature with a spotlight on brand new releases.  Hit maker jazz crowd favorite saxophonist and producer Boney James was in the spotlight for the interview with Sharon Kay.  Kay started the Artist of the Week feature at WFSK in 2006.  His new release is entitled "SOlid".
