This episode is from a WFSK weekly feature called "Artist of the Week.  It aired on WFSK JAZZY 88 Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 12:30 pm (cst) with the spotlight on Grammy-winning composer and bassists Christian McBride.  He discussed among many things his new release "The Movement Revisited: A Musical Portrait of Four Icons".  It's a culminating documentation of a richly inspired piece – lauding four key figures of the Civil Rights Movement: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Muhammad Ali.

Revolution in Black & White; Photos of Ernest Withers - Feb. 12, 2020

This episode is from a live show broadcast on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 5:00 pm (cst).  The 411 Show's Community News segment is first followed by book discussion with photo historian Richard Cahan. Revolution in Black and White: Photographs of the Civil Rights Era by Ernest Withers is co-authored by Cahan. 

Ernest C. Withers was one of the most prominent African-American photographers of the civil rights era. During the course of his work, he took thousands photographs that document the civil rights movement―from the Emmett Till trial in 1955 to the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968.  They are also important examples of photojournalism, documenting decades of struggle in Memphis and the Mid-South. They serve as an important missing link in the civil rights narrative.

This episode aired live on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 4:00 pm (cst).  The guest was author, speaker and retired attorney Dr. Herbert Harris to discuss his latest book "Solving The Race Issue In America"

Solving The Race Issue In America is a historical overview of the black American experience from the Civil War to the present. It is a spiritual and psychological treatment of Racism in America its causes, evolution and possibilities for the future. The goal of the book is not to indict white Americans as racists, but rather to educate all Americans to the facts so that we can better understand each other and work together to resolve the race issue.

Dr. Herbert Harris is a retired attorney and author of numerous books including How to Make Money in Music, his most popular book is, The Twelve Universal Laws of Success,

My monthly Pastor's Roundtable guest were Rev. Barry Barlow of New Asia Baptist Church in Herndon, Kentucky which comes on starting at 7:30 am.  He'll be joined for a segment by Rev. Brandon Williams of New Beginning International Ministry in Hermitage, TN.  These monthly conversations generally discuss a wide range of topics.   

Crack: Street Capitalism and the Decade of Greed - David Farber - 1-22-20

This show aired live on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 5:00 pm.  The guest was David Farber,  the Roy A. Roberts Distinguished Professor in the Department of History at the University of Kansas.  In his book Crack: Rock Cocaine, Street Capitalism, and the decade of Greed considers crack as a social and economic phenomenon in the 1980's and ’90's U.S. As Farber shows, for many young black men during the period, who were largely excluded from the labor market, selling drugs was “an economic lifeline.”

(cst)  The News from the Community was first, then Cedric de Leon, Ph.D. author of the book "Crisis" was the guest.  He's the Director of the Labor Center and Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  He In  analyzes two pivotal crises in the American two-party system: the first resulting in the demise of the Whig party and secession of eleven southern states in 1861, and the present crisis splintering the Democratic and Republican parties and leading to the election of Donald Trump.

This show aired live on Sunday, January 26, 2020 on WFSK radio beginning at 8:00 am.  The monthly feature on my show includes differing opinions and denominations on news and issues of the day.  Guest pastors were: Rev. Dr. Paula Smith of Gordon Memorial UMC Church, Rev. Ralph Thompson of Howard Congregational Church, (UCC) and Rev. Robin Kimbrough, Chaplain at Meharry Medical College.  

We spent much time on the study's findings on the 37208 and having the worst arrest stat in the country.  All of the guests churches and WFSK are in that zip code.

WFSK Artist of the Week Interview - Eddie Bullen 1-23-20

Pianist, composer, arranger and producer Eddie Bullen is in every way, a standout amongst his generation of multi-talented artists.  Eddie's lengthy career has yielded an abundance of awards and recognition for his outstanding talents.  The Toronto Canada-based artist gives his audience a taste of contemporary jazz, flavored with Caribbean rhythms.

We discussed among many things his latest release entitled "Kaleidoscope".

The election of 2016 prompted journalists and political scientists to write obituaries for the Republican Party—or prophecies of a new dominance. But it was all rather familiar. Whenever one of our two great parties has a setback, we’ve heard: “This is the end of the Democratic Party,” or, “The Republican Party is going out of existence.” Yet both survive, and thrive.

This was an interesting discussion.
