Separate: The Story of Plessy v. Ferguson

This show aired live on Wednesday March 13, 2019 at 5:00pm (cst).  Pulitzer Prize winning author Steve Luxenberg's recently released book was very interesting and goes in depth into America's journey from slavery to segregation as they relate to that Supreme Court case in 1896 synonymous with "separate but equal".   

Steve spent thirty years as a Washington Post senior editor. 

You Welcomed Me: What Would Jesus Do?

This show aired live on March 24, 2019 at 8:00am (cst).   Kent Annan is back on the show to further discuss his book You Welcomed Me: Loving Refugees and Immigrants Because God First Loved Me.  The topic of America's immigration policies and the current administration stay in the headlines, so we used that as the backdrop of the question "What Would Jesus Do?" 

Kent has worked extensively in disaster and humanitarian relief in countries like Haiti.  He is also an adult Bible study teacher at his local church.

This show aired live on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 4pm.  My News from the Community Segment comes from Fisk Galleries Director Jamal Sheets.   He talked about some new exhibits from African American artists and several major art events in April.

 

The guest for the hour was Erica Hayes, CPS, she discusses her new book on how to fix being broke by explaining why folks end up in that position in the first place.  She applies her 27-years of knowledge in the financil industry into the pages of the book. 

12 Lies That Hold America Captive: And the Truth That Sets Us Free

This show aired on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 8:00am(cst). My gust was Jonathan P. Walton in New York.  He's an area ministry director for InterVarsity Christian Fellowships's New York/New Jersey region and author of the book "Twelve Lies that Hold America Captive".

I enjoyed this faith-based conversation with him because he spoke the truth and shamed the devil.  He explained what he calls "White American Folk Religion", in chapter 1 "We Are a Christian Nation".  Which is the first of the 12 lies as he describes in his book. 

There is so much to discuss in this area that we only got to the first 4 lies.  We covered: 1. We Are a Christian Nation, 2. We All Are Immigrants, 3. We Are a Melting Pot, 4. All Men Are Created Equal.  I am going to have him back again soon so we can go a little further in our discussion.  

Community News and the Book "Against Our Will"

This show aired live on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 5pm (cst).  The hour started with my Community News Segment. Seanne Wilson from Tennessee State University gave some details on an upcoming fundraiser and awards dinner with special guest News commentator and activists Angela Rye.  

My book this hour is "Against Our Will: Sexual Trauma in American Art Since 1970" written by Vivien Green Fryd who was in the studio with me.  She is a Professor of Art History and PTSD researcher from nearby Vanderbilt University.  

Although this is a "heavy" subject, it was very informative at the intersection of art and trauma.  The book focuses mainly on the efforts of five American artists.  In our discussion we also touched on the MeToo Movement, and some of the headlines involving sex abuse allegations, and investigations in politics, Holywood, the church and in business. 

This was a great discussion and it was great to have her in the studio.   

 

Wednesday Edition with a Cngressinal Update & a book discussion on Brain Health

This show aired live on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 4pm (cst).  Congressman Jim Cooper from his Washington Office gave us an update on recent issues of concern with the current administration, hearings and investigations, etc. 

My next guest was Dr. Steven P. Simmons, MD, co-author of Brain Health As You Age: A Practical Guide To Maintenance and Prevention discussed taking care of your brain just as you do your health.  We covered: brain function, depression, forgetfulness, normal signs of aging, the need for exercising for brain health, drug and alcohol abuse, dementia, and alzheimer's.  

This was interesting information. Dr. Simmons is a board certified internists.

Guitarist, producer, and songwriter Dee Brown of Detroit was in our spotlight for the first time to discuss his 'Remembering You" CD Project.  He's an emerging talent known around the Detroit area.
