Ask the Councilman: District 19 Councilman Freddie O'Connell (10-23-19)

This show aired live on Wednesday, 10-23-19 at 5:00pm (cdt).  My Community News Segment featured Jean Kiddo, Chair of the FCC Incentive Auction Task Force to remind folks about the need to rescan their TV's for the changes in the band for those who use antennae's instead of cable services. 

My guest for the next portion of the show was Councilman Freddie O'Connell, Dist. 19 which happens to cover the area where Fisk University & WFSK are, as well as downtown and other gentrified neighborhoods nearby the downtown area.  The Councilman has been on my show several times before in the past and just recently won his 2nd term. 

Metro Human Relations Commission On: Various Issues (10-23-19)

This show aired live on Wednesday, 10-23-19 at 4:00pm (cdt) from the studios of WFSK.  As usual I started with my Community News Segment, then welcome in the guest and topic for the hour.  Attorney Mel Fowler Green, executive director of the Metro Human Relations Commission (MHRC) making her first appearance on my show since getting the position 3-years ago.   

Among the many issues we discussed were the much talked about getting cameras on Metro Nashville Police Officers and why its taking so long, the new Community Oversight Board which the citizens voting into effect, constant foot-dragging that appears to be happening when it come to issues with the police department and the community concern about this city's 2 police involved shootings. 

MHRC's core mission  is to protect and promote the personal dignity, peace, safety, security, health, and general welfare of all people in Nashville and Davidson County.

We also took calls and had a little time to discuss out city's affordable housing disparity.  She will be back in about 4 to 6 weeks to further this discussion.   

 

 

Issues of Cyber Security, etc. (10-17-19)

This show aired live on Wednesday, 10-17-19 at 5:00pm.  My News from the Community Segment came from Supervisory Special Agent Kevin Varpness, FBI Memphis Division – Nashville Resident Agency who discussed the FBI Cyber public-private partnerships - Cybersecurity is the ultimate team sport!

The month of October is Cyber-Security Month.  It was a joy to bring back a prior guest on this topic Dr. Eugene Spafford, a professor with an appointment in Computer Science at Purdue University, where he has served on the faculty since 1987.  He's a leader in information security research & policy & one of the most senior people in academia in information security with over 30 years experience. Dr. Spafford is consultant to national agencies & leaders, major corporations & professional organizations.

Dr. Spafford was originally on my show back in 2012 and according to him to a lot has changed and some issues are new since that time.  

Hour-47 of WFSK's 48-Hour Radiothon 10-6-19

2019 marks the 14th year for WFSK's 48-Hour 'round the clock' Radiothon Fall Fund Drive. 411 Show host and creator Sharon Kay is General Manager of WFSK Radio at Fisk University in addition to hosting a long-running talk show. 

WFSK receives very limited funding from the university (shoe string budget) and is not a classroom room, but a more like a community radio station.  Ms. Kay's model to sustain the historic station, develop branding, and of course build-up the listenership meant going back to her radio roots.  

This is a real-live no sleep all weekend drive... 

 

Honorable Mike Thurmond of Georgia (10-17-19)

This show aired live on Wednesday, 10-17-19 at 4:00pm (cdt) on WFSK Fisk University.  It begins with my weekly feature "News from the Community", where we hear about various events and activities both local and national.. Clarence White of the Nashville Civitan Club shared details of the organization and a local event in connection with the overarching mission of the civil group.

My guest for this hour was Mr. Mike L. Thurmond, CEO of DeKalb County Georgia, historian and author.  He's a former Georgia Legislator with a distinguished career in government and community service.  Mr. Thurmond first appearance on What's the 411? with Sharon Kay about 7 years ago where we discussed the Athens communities efforts on keeping the Moore's Ford Bridge Lynching's in 1946 on the minds of the public.  It was America’s last unresolved mass lynching. 

With a serious love for Black History and a strong desire to make sure the stories are told, Thurmond’s latest book, Freedom: Georgia’s Antislavery Heritage, 1733-1865, was awarded the Georgia Historical Society’s Lilla Hawes Award.

"It was an inspirational discussion and enlightening as he pulled Tennessee facts right into the historical time frame of his book, that made for a well-rounded interview", said Kay, host and show creator.  

There was also questions asked of the guest on his take on the recent Georgia races as they relate to national politics.   

   

Sunday Edition of What's the 411? on His New Book: How Reason Can Lead to God

This show aired live on Sunday September 29, 2019 at 8:00am (cst) with Assistant Professor of Philosophy Dr. Josh Rasmussen at Azusa Pacific University.  We had a lnghty discussion on reason and "thinking thoroughly in a spiritual way".  It was very good and enlightening.   

Legendary Man of Jazz Ahmad Jamal 10-9-19

This show which aired on Wednesday, 10-9-19 at 5:00pm (cst) was a treat for me,  to talk with the Jazz Master Ahmad Jamal whose career in music spans more that 70-years. It was my birthday so it was a rare treat to get the chat with him for the interview of a lifetime on my birthday!  Thank you Ahmad!!  

 

 

Dr. Elred Taylor discuses Holistic Medicine & Hormones (9-25-19)

This show aired live on Wednesday, 9-25-19 at 4:00m (cst) and started with the 411 Show's Segment of "News From the Community", which came from Lisa Spells of the L.A.S. Therapy Network, followed by the guest Dr. Elred Taylor, M.D. & speaker. He's an obstetrician-gynecologist in Atlanta, Georgia and has been in practice for more than 20 years.  

Also, known at The Hormone Doctor, is a well-known, dynamic speaker on Functional and Anti-Aging Medicine we discussed quite a bit and I'm going to have him back on the show.  

The 411 Show's Empowerment & Encouragement Hour with Adonis Lenzy

This show aired live on Wednesday, 10-2-19 in the 2nd hour at 5:00 pm (cst) The 411 Show's Community News Segment came from Dr. Forest Harris, President of American Baptist College which is celebrating its 95-year anniversary.  Guest this hour was Adonis Lenzy, motivational speaker, author and pastor. He appears on my show once a quarter for empowerment & leadership discussions.      

Subject Was On: Successful Detox Program for Weight Loss and Other Wellness Issues with Donna Perillo on 10-2-19

This show aired live on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 4:00pm (cst). Before our guest came on I got my segment on "News from the Community" on the International Black Film Festival with Hazel Joyner SMith, founder and Executive Director.  

My guest this hour was Dr. Donna Perillo, a doctor of chiropractic and a Fellow of The International Academy of Clinical Acupuncture, a Certified Nutrition Specialist, and a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine based in Chiropractic Healing Center of New Jersey. It's a health and wellness center combining Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Physical Therapy, Nutrition, and massage.New Jersey. We had a great conversation 

WFSK Artist of the Week Interviews: Nicholas Cole (9-19-19)

WFSK's music feature Artist of the Week is a good time to keep up on the new smooth & contemporary jazz releases and gt to know more about the recording artists.  Keyboardists and producer Nicholas Cole a young dynamic talent who has been on the scene for almost a decade.  His first interview with WFSK as Emerging new Talent in smooth & contemporary jazz was when he was 17-years old.  He's now 26 years old and doing great things in songwriting, producing and playing the keys.  

Nicholas' latest release is "The Weekend".  He's a native of North Carolina.
